Since I’m Australian, you may not use the same words for the foods/terms I’ve used… so here’s a list of ones I know of.

Capsicum” = Pepper (red pepper, green pepper etc.) or Bell pepper.
Mince” = Ground beef /minced beef (what you would use to make hamburgers/meatballs)
Spring onions” = Shallots, scallions, échalote (those things like a large chive)
Icing Sugar” = Confectioners Sugar, Powdered sugar (finely ground sugar often with cornflour added)
“Sugar” = Granulated Sugar .  A standard sugar you’d use in cups of coffee/tea for example (coarser ground than castor sugar)
“Raw Sugar” = A brownish yellow coarse sugar
“Plain Flour” = All Purpose Flour
Pikelet” = a small pancake, about 4inches wide, usually served cold (usually with jam and cream on top, like a scone).  Also called a dropped scone or a griddle-cake/scone) may be similar to a “silver dollar” pancake.
Sultana” = Dried grapes, sultana raisins.  (Here “raisins” are a different form of dried something [grape?], not sure exactly what it is, but it’s smaller and darker than a “sultana”)

Baking Soda = Bicarbonate of Soda, Bicarb (Sodium bicarbonate)
Baking Powder = Baking soda mixed with an acid (usually cream of tartar)
Vinegar or lemonjuice can apparently be added with baking soda if you don’t have baking powder.

Self raising flour can be made by mixing:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • a pinch to ½ teaspoon salt
